Preparing for your maternity photo session

Pregnancy is such a special time in a woman’s life and having photos to document it is a decision you won’t regret! Your photos will be cherished for years to come and will help you remember the precious moments with your little one growing inside of your belly.

For some, the thought of finding a photographer and scheduling a session can be a bit overwhelming. Where do you start? Well, lucky for you, I’ve teamed up with local photographer Melanie Mathieu to offer some tips that should help you plan and prepare!

1) Choosing the right photographer. As a first step, Melanie recommends putting some thought into what style of photos you want (posed, candid, moody, etc.). Spend some researching local photographers and browsing their portfolios. When you’ve found a photographer (or two) whose work speaks to you and your style, book a consultation to discuss your ideas. The consultation will help you determine whether or not they are the right fit for you!

2) Book your session before 36 weeks. You want your photos taken when your belly is prominent so Melanie always recommends sometime between your 32nd and 36th week. If you are expecting multiples, she recommended that you book your session just a little bit earlier. Keep in mind that weekend sessions tend to book up quickly so it’s a good idea to contact your preferred photographer(s) as early as you can!

3) Don’t be shy to make special requests. If there is a pose or prop (e.g. ultrasound photo, baby shoes) that you absolutely want captured during your session, make sure to mention it to your photographer in advance. That being said, if there is a feature or angle that you are self-conscious about, mention that too! Your photographer wants you to love the final results so it’s important to mention any special requests up front!

4) Put some thought into what you’ll wear. You want your photos to be a true reflection of you so as a general rule, I always recommend wearing something timeless but that also speaks to your own personal style. Choosing a fitted dress or top will be best show off your new curves and baby bump! One of my favorite things is helping customers choose the perfect outfit for their photos so don’t be shy to book a consult with me if you aren’t quite sure what to wear.

The most important part is to relax and have fun. It's such a special time and you'll have these photos to remember and cherish for the rest of your life! If you liked this blog post then I'd love it if you joined the mailing list and kept in touch! You can do so by clicking here!
